The Georgia Public Service Commission is the official authority on most utility services in Georgia. For a complete list of electric, natural gas, and telephone providers, go to www.psc.state.ga.us or call 404.656.4501.
Below you will find some information that may be helpful to you for your specific area:
DeKalb County
- Georgia Power: www.GeorgiaPower.com
- Gas: your choice (For more info: http://www.psc.state.ga.us/gas/gas.asp )
- Water: (cannot be turned on in your name until closing). If you print out this form and bring it to the closing http://www.co.dekalb.ga.us/revenue/waterapp.pdf, you will be able to fax it in and have it taken care of while at the closing. If your property was built prior to 1993, you will need to ensure that your fixtures are low-flow compliant and you will need to also fax in a completed Certificate of Compliance (to be filled out by a home inspector, plumber or DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management)
- Sanitation and Garbage: are part of your taxes and do not need to be "activated" separately unless you are moving to an incorporated City such as City of Decatur and City of Clarkston. In City of Decatur, you will participate in "Pay as You Throw" garbage collection http://www.decaturga.com/cgs_citysvcs_sfm_sanitationinfo.aspx. For any other areas, it is best to contact the municipality directly.
